    Nice sturdy grab bars
When you’re getting in or out of a tub or shower, or getting yourself up from the toilet, it’s handy to have grab bars. The temptation is to reach for a towel holder, but they typically aren’t strong enough. My choice is to replace the towel holders in the bathroom with stainless steel grab bars, and add others where needed. It may sound like nit picking, but I prefer the 1 1/4 inch diameter, with a knurled finish for extra grip. And I like the bars with welded flanges that aren’t going to slip or rattle. An additional consideration is getting a length that corresponds to the stud placement inside the wall. These grab bars fill the bill. And other lengths are available.Since these are for support, not just holding up a towel, they need to be anchored firmly to something structural, preferably a stud behind the wallboard. I use a strip of blue painters tape to mark the approximate location, then use a stud finder to locate the studs and mark that on the tape. I mark a level or vertical line and the locations of the mounting holes. Just one #10 screw is strong enough to hold one end of a bar, two screws into solid wood is better. Additional holes can be drilled in the flange with a Cobalt drill. It’s easier to mark the holes and fasten the bars when the loose caps are temporarily taped at the center of the bar. I Drill pilot holes, and adjust position slightly to best reach the studs. Then the long stainless steel screws secure the bar. With the bar secured to the wall, the loose caps can be snapped over the end plates to cover the screw heads. I also use clear silicone adhesive to hold the caps in place and prevent water from penetrating. It’s possible to attach a grab bar to a thin plastic shower enclosure. You’ll need some extra short hollow wall anchors, such as the Midwest # 12021. The anchors are installed first, then the screws removed and used to fasten the bar flanges. The fastener screws are only #6, but three on each end provides a reasonably strong attachment. When inserting a hollow wall anchor in a hard plastic, I drill three tiny holes for the tangs that prevent the anchor from turning, and apply adhesive to the hole to help prevent water incursion. Once the anchors are installed, the grab bar can be attached, using small washers under the screw heads, and silicone seal to secure the cover plates.I would not suggest attempting to secure a grab bar directly to a hollow plasterboard wall where there is no solid wood behind. Plasterboard simply isn’t strong enough, and there’s no easy way to add reinforcement. One option is to install a decorative board across the wall on the outside, to reach at least two studs, then secure the bar to the added piece.

Welded flanges make the installation strong and rigid.
Installed by the bathroom shower for safe egress (installed into studs). Welded flanges make the installation strong and safe. Good value compared to Home Depot and Lowes products.
